Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 2008 Garden of the Gods

The Garden of the Gods is a beautiful setting for this run/walk/race event! Today was clear and bright and warm and the organization of the event was superb. There were 3 radio stations and 3 or 4 bands on the route to provide musical entertainment — if the scenery was not sufficient impetus! The sponsors provided, apples, bagels & cream cheese, yogurt, water, soda and cookies (there were lots of kids after all!). There were items to buy and freebie sponsor items as usual and more music and prize giving after the race. I believe in the region of 8,000 people turned out for it today. I went with my friend Brenda and it was a great morning. It is truly a fabulous charity; Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from the Komen Colorado Springs Race for the Cure® remains in the El Paso, Teller, and Pueblo counties to support breast cancer programs and activities here. The other twenty-five percent goes to research programs at the national level. Here are a couple of pix of the event.

There are Susan G. Komen events all over the country if you’d like to particpate. When I lived in Hawaii I went to the local events there too. If you get a chance please visit the Susan G. Komen website to find out more about this fantastic cause, events in your area, and about how the program operates in your town. To see information about the National Race for the Cure you can visit here. The next one will be held Saturday, June 06, 2009 at the National Mall, Washington, DC.

You can also get pink ribbon merchandise here that will benefit the BreastCancerSite.com and despite all the pink please realise that MEN get breast cancer too! In the United States, approximately 2030 new cases of MBC are diagnosed annually, and 450 deaths occur. The median age of onset of MBC is 65 to 67, approximately 5 to 10 years older than in women. Like female breast cancer, the incidence of MBC has been increasing; one report suggests that incidence has increased 26 percent over the past 25 years. Please click on this special ribbon, a symbol of the John W. Nick Foundation, Inc. for more information!
